The Inn at Moonlight Beach is located in the quiet beach community of Old Encinitas, just off historic Highway 101, 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. We're 2 blocks off Interstate 5, the major north-south freeway between San Diego and Los Angeles, a 25 minute drive from the San Diego International Airport.

We are located 2 blocks from Moonlight State Beach, 4 miles south of Carlsbad, 6 miles north of Del Mar, 12 miles north of La Jolla, 20 miles north of the San Diego Airport and 10 miles south of Oceanside.

We're a 2 minute walk to Moonlight State Beach and another 2 minutes to the ocean.

Driving Directions: Exit Interstate 5 at Encinitas Blvd and turn west, towards the ocean. You'll see a Shell Station and a Denny's at the first light. The second light is Vulcan Ave; you can see the ocean at Moonlight Beach straight ahead. Turn right. The third driveway up the hill is Inn at Moonlight Beach, well marked with our sign. At night you can't miss the lit sign and the glowing blue orbs - welcome! Drive up the drive. There is parking for 3 cars behind the building and 3 more in the marked spaces at the bottom of the driveway. The office is well marked at the rear parking lot. Check-in time is 2:30 p.m. or later. Please do not arrive earlier as we need until 2:30 to clean and prepare the suites. If you arrive after 6:00 p.m. we will leave a note on the door for you with instructions to your room.

TAXIS & SHUTTLES

Taxis from the cab stand at the San Diego airport cost $75 - $95 to the Inn at Moonlight Beach. We think that is highway robbery. The Super Shuttle (a/k/a Clouod 9 Shuttle) is $49 per person, $69 for two. From all reports they are timely and reliable.

The Trains (Amtrak or the Coaster) are the most economical way of getting here without renting a car. Ann and Terry regularly use the Coaster when flying in and out of San Diego airport (fare: $7.00). See directions and details below.

LIMO SERVICE AT TAXI PRICES Terry put ads on Craig's List to find independent taxis limos to transport our guests at more reasonable rates. Here are the two lowest bidders. Remind them of the rates on this webpage and be sure to let us know your experience with their service.

Rocky Rodriguez owns and operates Elite Transportation, a one-car limo service with a nice town car. Rocky's one-way rates to/from the San Diego Airport are $50.00. To/from Carlsbad Airport $30.00. To/from the Solana Beach Train Station $20.00. These are better-than-taxi rates. Call (619) 990-2472.

They can have a van at our doorstep within minutes. Based on a rate of $3.50 cents per mile, their rates are to/from San Diego International Airport: $80.00. TRAINS

TRAINS: As you can see on the map, we are situated across the street from the Amtrak and Coaster commuter trail tracks. We've lived here since May and have always found the spectacle of the raw power of these trains to be a part of the landscape. Learn more about our trains.

Taking The Coaster From the Airport

When you arrive at the airport, ask any official or airport employee where the city bus stop is. There are two stops in front of each terminal. The bus comes by every 12 minutes or so. You will need $2.25 exact change. Tell the driver you wish to go to the Santa Fe Station to take the Coaster, and ask him to tell you when to exit. It's about a 10 minute ride. You will see the rail station (a sign in huge letters Santa Fe Station) from the left side of the bus just before you arrive (it's our "Grand Central Station").

Buy a ticket to the Encinitas Station at any automated kiosk (cash or credit card) for $7.00. The Coaster departs about every hour or so (see exact schedule links below). Exit at Encinitas (about 40 minutes, it's the next station following Solana Beach). After exiting the train, wait until the train departs, then go east across the tracks, and across the parking lot to the street (Vulcan). Walk left (north) on Vulcan 300 feet to Encinitas Blvd. Cross Encinitas Blvd at the light, walk up the hill to the third driveway on the right. Look for the blue sign that says Inn at Moonlight Beach. Total walk: 4 minutes from the train station to our office door.

NOTE: ON WEEKENDS THE COASTER DOES NOT RUN REGULARLY... and on Sundays does not run unless there is a major sporting event downtown (Baseball or Football). The Amtrak runs daily. Download and read the Coaster schedule.

Train Travel Tip: Leave your luggage on the main floor car (in the open area for bikes and luggage); it's safe. Take your valuables with you upstairs and sit on the left side of the train for great views of the ocean as you enter North County.

Taking an Amtrak Train

Amtrak: The Amtrak runs seven days a week from Santa Fe Station and is $13 one way. Tickets are purchased at the Amtrak Ticket Windows inside the station. The Amtrak does not stop at the Encinitas station. Regardless of whether you are traveling from the north (Los Andeles) or from the south (the airport) we recommend that you purchase a ticket to the Solana Beach Station three miles south of us.

There is a cab stand at the Solana Beach station. We recommend that you negotiate for a $20 fare to the Inn at Moonlight Beach (we are only a 6 minute cab ride). Be sure the driver does not confuse us with the much larger Moonlight Beach Hotel. Tell the driver our address: 105 NORTH VULCAN Ave, 3 drives north of Encinitas Blvd.
